More and more applications, such as camera control, need super-low latency. At the same time, live production has become more popular. Humans can get used to some latency, but the lower the latency is, the easier it is to deal with it.
With JPEG XS, compared to the previous JPEG 2000, we are talking about 1- to 3-millisecond latency versus 100 milliseconds with JPEG 2000. This really gives the feeling to the technical staff and operators that there is no latency at all and that they can do everything as if they were there! These are the benefits of JPEG XS: very minimal latency, very high-quality for supporting remote production. JPEG XS is the new ISO/IEC standard 21122, designed for latency-critical real-time applications and offering near-lossless and visually lossless quality with low power and low complexity.
