On the intoPIX booth, visitors were stunned by the way the new TicoRAW - introduced at the show - manages to reduce crucial bandwidth and storage, while retaining all the benefits for which we all love RAW image data. In a demonstration of a real live editing situation, visitors could play and edit TicoRAW sequences right next to uncompressed RAW on Davinci Resolve.

Next to that, video creators and camera manufacturers were extremely attracted to the benefits of using TicoRAW for internal compression within a device. The potential of bandwidth and resulting power savings straight from the sensor appealed to engineers and filmmakers alike.

The new TicoRAW IP-cores come with a pixel line latency, ultra-low memory usage, extremely low power consumption and can code anything from an HD to a large 8K sensor, up to 16bits down to 1bpp (16:1).

Just as in our daily life, also broadcast venues face an increase in camera installations – all with the potential to shoot in RAW. But who is to deal with the bandwidth required by uncompressed RAW? On the other hand, when looking at the RAW-codec landscape one faces complications too. In general RAW technologies are proprietary, linked to a limited amount of products or brands, or simply very unwieldy. TicoRAW is finally a technology built for industry-wide support and not linked to a specific product or brand. RAW flexibility at JPEG sizes with full industry interoperability … a dream come true?

Is there still any interest in using uncompressed? intoPIX expert Jean-Baptiste Lorent pinpointed the clear advantages of using JPEG XS video streams as made possible by the upcoming part 22 of ST2110 and highlighted how JPEG XS is posed to replace the usage of unwieldy uncompressed video data. This switch greatly increases the flexibility of live production workflows and permits major cost savings thanks to the usage of cost-effective COTS equipment.
